Al-Zeer Salem Episode 1: The Bell That Rang Before the Bloodshed Began

THE READING PASSAGE

P01

Three moons after Qulaib's burial, Salem returned from the border valley, where the fires of his raid were already a week old. Everyone agreed that Bakr's tents had burned. No one agreed whether the first flames had risen before the white strip of truce was raised or after it was lowered. Those who had urged him forward called the raid a warning; those who had buried children called it a slaughter. The names did not change the ashes. They changed what the survivors could ask of him. His mother counted the sons who had not returned. Salem counted the men who had demanded vengeance and now wished to inherit its honour without answering for its cost.

P02

On the morning after his return, a boy brought a bronze seal found in a dead messenger's coat. Its face bore Jassas's mark; a date written on the back named the second day after the raid. The clerk accepted the mark as genuine but could not determine when the date had been added. It might record the dispatch of a message, the identification of a body, or a later attempt to connect one with the other. A genuine mark could travel without its owner. The date could name a day without proving that its writer had witnessed anything on that day. Salem listened to these distinctions, then asked which of them would bring his brother back. The clerk had answered a question about evidence. Salem had replaced it with a question the evidence could never answer.

P03

Jalila brought another fragment. Behind a hanging cloth she had heard the end of a messenger's report: 'He is to be moved before dawn. His brother has given leave.' She had heard neither man's name, nor the sentence that explained why the movement was necessary. She thought the plan might prevent a second massacre. Salem called it an order to shelter Qulaib's killer. In his retelling, 'his brother' became 'Jassas's brother'; the proposed movement became a rescue from deserved punishment. No new witness entered the story between the two versions. Only the uncertainty left it. Jalila insisted that knowing whom a sentence referred to would still not tell them everything its speaker intended.

P04

His mother opened a chest and produced a truce slip bearing her thumbprint. It had authorised Bakr caravans to draw water during the first two nights after Qulaib's death. A third night appeared beneath them in another ink. No one could establish whether that line preceded the third crossing or was added afterwards. She acknowledged the first permission without certifying the history of the later line. Salem called the slip mercy for the hand that had killed his brother. She did not deny that an armed rider might have drunk beside a widow. She denied that the widow's thirst thereby became his accomplice. 'Mercy belongs to the living,' she said, 'including those who have done nothing that needs forgiving.' The slip could explain an act of relief without identifying every person who benefited from it.

P05

The family council met among the saddles. Hareth, Salem's cousin, said the oath had named Jassas, not every person who had carried a sack or opened a well. Salem answered that bread reaching a fugitive made its carrier part of the original wound. 'If I had known whom the grain would feed, I would have withheld it,' Hareth said. A listener outside the tent caught parts of the sentence when the wind dropped, but not its opening condition. By sunset his version had become: 'Hareth knew whom the grain would feed.' He was asked to repeat it, and repetition did what direct sight had not: it made him a witness in the eyes of people who already needed one. The council had acquired confidence without acquiring another observation.

P06

Jalila requested a hearing that could distinguish delivery, destination, and knowledge. The elder postponed judgment until the next afternoon: Hareth would bring the grain register from the shrine; Salem would bring a witness able to identify its recipient. Salem swore by Qulaib's name that he would neither confine nor punish Hareth before that review. The register was then to be examined by two copyists, neither chosen by him. He accepted the procedure aloud. Later, when he recalled the council, he remembered Hareth's obligation to produce the document more readily than his own obligation to wait. The oath remained in his memory, but the restraint that had made it answerable to others grew faint.

P07

Before dawn Salem took his nephew Rabi towards the shrine. The boy knew the old eastern path, but a marker now pointed west. 'I can show you where the path used to run,' Rabi said. 'I cannot tell you why the stone has moved.' Salem pointed at the marker. 'We cannot spend another morning doubting stones.' Rabi followed the direction; a falling rock broke his arm. Who had shifted the marker remained unknown. Who had ordered the boy to follow it did not. Salem carried him home and called the injury another cost Bakr had imposed. 'You pointed,' Rabi answered. The boy's pain had not diminished, but Salem had already found a place for it among injuries that could demand repayment. He answered by tightening the bandage, as though the arm had asked only to be held.

P08

After carrying Rabi home, Salem went alone to the shrine. The register contained an older column written before Qulaib's burial and a later entry promising grain for three nights of crossing. The recipient's name survived only as 'J—'; beneath an erasure, either 'widow' or 'rider' could be guessed. The lower edge carried rain-marks. A servant remembered leaving the pages dry but could not say who had moved them afterwards. The truce slip and the later entry also shared an unusual spelling of the well's name. That resemblance might indicate copying, a shared local convention, or coincidence; it did not certify independent agreement. Salem noted the register's position and left it for Hareth to collect. The pages had a recoverable history in some respects. Their recipient did not yet have a recoverable identity.

P09

Hareth brought the register that afternoon as instructed. He admitted carrying sacks on the third night. He could not say whether the third-night line was then on the slip: two children were hungry, and he had acted on that need. Asked who had slept in the far tent, he answered, 'The rider whose horse had no bell.' He had seen the horse outside; he had not seen the rider's face. Salem treated the description as a name and the delivery as an admission of knowingly feeding Jassas. He set the entry beside the description. On one side stood a sack; on the other, a horse. He supplied the man who joined them. Before the promised review could occur, Salem ordered Hareth confined. The register had arrived. The witness Salem had promised had not.

P10

That night Salem removed the register from the council's table and the truce slip from his mother's chest, without permission. The clerk had tied a label to the register: 'Recipient not identified.' Salem did not destroy it. He folded it inward so that a reader would meet the entry before meeting the qualification. 'I am recovering what war took from her,' he told himself. What his mother had lost was not ownership of the paper; what he was taking was its availability to other readers. Nevertheless, the word 'recovering' made the taking resemble repair. He placed the two documents together. Their agreement looked stronger when their separate uncertainties were no longer visible at the same time. The papers could now travel as a case before they had been examined as records.

P11

Before the next dawn, Salem led Hareth to an abandoned well, away from the hearing. Jalila followed with a strip said to contain Qulaib's final instruction: do not pursue Jassas beyond this well. Its handwriting was old; the part that might authenticate the instruction was damaged. Salem called it a forgery without submitting it to the copyists. Jalila asked why an incomplete register could justify action while an incomplete command could not justify delay. 'A false mercy may cost another life,' he answered. 'A delayed punishment costs my brother twice.' Hareth watched him weigh the life that might be lost by waiting. No one asked to weigh Hareth's life against an error in acting. The wind lifted the command's torn edge. Salem put the register on a dry ledge and left Jalila holding the other paper.

P12

The register lay on the stone ledge beside Salem. Hareth's hand moved towards it; Salem's hand went to his sword-hilt. Jalila, turning towards them, saw the raised arm but not the first movement. Salem struck with the scabbard. Hareth fell against the stone. Afterwards the reach would be described as an attack, a warning, or an attempt to recover the register. The descriptions would compete over intention; none could turn the blow itself into a rumour. Salem gathered the papers and left before checking whether his cousin was breathing. Jalila called Hareth's name, then went towards camp for help. When she returned, no one remained at the well. Absence arrived after injury. It did not explain what had happened between them.

P13

At first light, a cousin reported that Hareth had died there; he had not seen the body. A water-carrier said Hareth had crossed the eastern ridge, but admitted that he had recognised a cloak in poor light, not a face. Jalila reported only an empty well on her return. The cousin had a name but no body; the carrier had a cloak but no face; Jalila had a place and the hour at which she found it empty. The clerk asked who had approached the well while she was absent. No one answered. He entered each account beside its source instead of choosing the loudest. Salem asked him to enter a conclusion. The clerk said that the space left blank was not an invitation to write whatever the family could most easily survive.

P14

Salem gave his mother the papers, demanding that she choose which deserved belief. She burned the alleged last instruction and kept the register available to the clerk. Asked whether she had thereby declared the instruction false, she answered, 'I know which one will be obeyed before it is tested.' A dead brother's purported command could bind a living son before anyone established the voice behind it. A record of grain could still be read against the people who had used it. Her destruction settled neither authorship nor innocence; it removed one kind of authority while preserving a means of questioning another. When Salem asked whose hand she feared, she said, 'If you name the hand, they will count your fingers.' The rule by which he joined others to a wrong could also join his own acts to theirs.

P15

The council called him an oath-breaker and a kin-slayer before it called him Qulaib's brother. The elder repeated the pledge everyone had heard, then asked when the promised review had occurred. Salem gave no hour. Asked who had seen Hareth dead, the cousin gave no witness. The elder asked Salem to answer for the blow and the removal of the records. Salem answered, 'Until you prove he died, there is nothing of mine to answer for.' He would answer none of the smaller questions until the largest had been answered. Earlier, an unnamed recipient had not kept him from ordering Hareth's wrists bound. Now, an unconfirmed death kept him from naming anything his own hand had done. The council's haste did not make his reasoning sound. His reasoning did not make the council's unverified title true.

P16

That night Salem opened a spare leaf of the register. Under 'what had been done to us' he wrote Qulaib, his mother's grief, Rabi's arm, and finally Hareth. Under 'what I had done' he left no entry. Hareth's uncertain fate had not been resolved; his name had been reassigned. It no longer had to identify the grain's recipient. It had to increase the debt that could justify the next pursuit. The injuries were real, but their arrangement was his. He could remember the blow without allowing it to count as an act for which he owed an answer. Beyond the tent, the burned valley remained burned and the well remained empty. Inside, the account balanced only because he had chosen what counted as a cost.

Everyone agreed that Bakr's tents had burned. […] Salem struck with the scabbard. […] Asked who had seen Hareth dead, the cousin gave no witness.

الإجابة الصحيحة A

A genuine mark could travel without its owner. The date could name a day without proving that its writer had witnessed anything on that day.

'If I had known whom the grain would feed, I would have withheld it' […] 'Hareth knew whom the grain would feed.'

he remembered Hareth's obligation to produce the document more readily than his own obligation to wait.

two children were hungry, and he had acted on that need. […] Salem treated the description as a name and the delivery as an admission of knowingly feeding Jassas.

he would neither confine nor punish Hareth before that review. […] Asked who had seen Hareth dead, the cousin gave no witness.

The elder asked Salem to answer for the blow and the removal of the records. […] 'Until you prove he died, there is nothing of mine to answer for.'

17Narrative perspective and distance

Which description best accounts for the narrator's access to Salem's reasoning without making that reasoning authoritative?

The injuries were real, but their arrangement was his.

18Metaphor and reclassification

What changes when Hareth's name appears under 'what had been done to us' in the final register?

Choose one answer for Question 18

الإجابة الصحيحة A

Hareth's uncertain fate had not been resolved; his name had been reassigned.

19Counterfactual synthesis

Suppose the command were authenticated and a new witness confirmed Hareth alive after the blow. Which criticism of Salem would remain directly supported?

Choose one answer for Question 19

Before the promised review could occur, Salem ordered Hareth confined.

The council's haste did not make his reasoning sound. His reasoning did not make the council's unverified title true.
