The Blacklist

The Blacklist.

The Skinner:

تعود Between Sleep and Awake إلى أثر مقتل ليز في ريسلر.

You may understand every word… and still miss the betrayal.

He knows the secrets, keeps the operation running, and has a persuasive explanation for every decision. Everything invites you to trust him… until you realize that you are asking what he will allow you to choose. When did the person entrusted with your interests gain the final say over your future?

Read the analysis in Arabic, then test your understanding of its argument through the original English text. Executive vocabulary, practical expressions, and 15 advanced reading questions will challenge you to distinguish expertise from authorization, an allegation from evidence, and a persuasive explanation from a conclusion the passage actually supports.

Keep this question with you as you read: when did you begin trusting the argument more than examining the evidence?

The Blacklist Season 9: When Keeping an Empire Running Becomes a Claim to Own Its Future

A person can keep your organization running while deciding that you should no longer control its future. That is the unsettling possibility Marvin Gerard brings to Season 9. His competence makes his claim persuasive to himself; his entrusted access gives him ways to act on it. The central question is whether preserving an operation entitles its custodian to overrule the person who entrusted it to him.

Part 9-1 — Returning people, altered relationships

Two years after Liz Keen’s death, the Skinner investigation brings scattered members of the Task Force back together. Dembe is now an FBI agent, and the returning people have different histories and circumstances from those they had before the separation. A reunion restores contact. It does not, by itself, restore shared expectations about how the work should be done.

Two structures must remain distinct. The FBI team operates within an institution; Red’s private network relies heavily on his relationships and knowledge. Their cooperation joins different sources of authority. Key-person dependency describes the vulnerability created when crucial work depends on knowledge or connections concentrated in one individual. Other people may keep routine operations moving while parts of that dependence remain unresolved.

Dembe’s new role creates obligations that must coexist with an old relationship. Boukman Baptiste reconnects his present circumstances with the events surrounding his move to the FBI. Personal trust cannot settle every question about what information he may use or disclose. This is a conflict between roles, not automatic evidence of dishonest loyalty. Between Sleep and Awake makes a related point through Ressler: the returning individual has lived through a loss that a restored job title cannot reverse. Recognizing changed circumstances need not mean either suspending accountability or declaring someone permanently incapable.

Part 9-2 — Pressure, judgment, and delegated power

Cooper’s blackmail separates three things that pressure can make people confuse: an allegation, the evidence supporting it, and the leverage gained by threatening him. A threat can influence conduct without proving its own accusation. Respect for Cooper does not remove the need to examine events; the existence of an accusation does not justify treating it as an established finding. The blackmail inquiry also becomes connected to the search for the person behind Liz’s death.

Aram’s leadership brings another problem into view: expertise does not automatically resolve the burden of making contested decisions. The Bear Mask connects that burden with self-doubt and self-punishment. Leadership becomes a test of how he exercises judgment under pressure and lives with the possibility of error. Seeking advice can improve a judgment without transferring responsibility for the final decision to the adviser.

Marvin’s leap from expertise to entitlement

The chronology matters. Marvin’s plot against Liz precedes Red’s withdrawal; the season reveals his responsibility later. Absence must not be mistaken for the origin of the betrayal. The person who maintained parts of the business after the loss was implicated in creating that loss. Operational continuity and loyalty to Red’s chosen future were therefore different things.

Marvin considers himself better suited than Liz to inherit the empire. The principal–agent problem provides a useful analytical lens: someone entrusted to act for another can use that authority to pursue a conflicting purpose. His ability explains how he can interfere; it does not establish his entitlement to do so. Even if a concern about Liz’s suitability were reasonable, that concern would not authorize him to eliminate her. A valid criticism of a decision is not permission to seize the decision.

The reveal also changes how earlier service can be interpreted. Keeping the business alive appears to demonstrate loyalty, but we must ask which future the custodian is keeping it alive for. The argument does not require pretending Marvin lacks competence. His competence is part of what makes the conflict dangerous.

One culprit, incompatible outcomes

Red wants revenge. Cooper needs Marvin captured and a case established to protect himself from imprisonment. Their immediate target is shared, but their desired outcomes diverge. Cooper’s position also involves personal stakes; institutional action is not automatically free from self-interest. Identifying a culprit therefore leaves a separate question about who should determine what happens next. Marvin, meanwhile, tries to negotiate a new position with the federal authorities as an alternative source to Red.

A disclosure that survives its author

Marvin tells Wujing about Red’s covert FBI cooperation and supplies names of criminals affected by it. Wujing’s escape and announced intention to retaliate make the threat concrete at the close of the season. The later campaign’s results remain outside that endpoint. A limited disclosure can matter because it changes how recipients interpret their past and whom they see as an enemy. It does not need to contain an entire operational map to become dangerous.

This is the logic of second-order consequences: other people respond to a disclosure, and their responses create further effects. Ending the discloser’s role does not erase what others now know. The season connects a problem of continuity with a problem of control over entrusted knowledge.

The executive application is a set of questions about mandates, review, and incentives. It is not proof that one procedure would prevent betrayal, nor a claim that a criminal empire is a model institution. The useful distinction is between being able to run a system and being authorized to determine its ends. Loyalty becomes difficult to assess precisely when someone invokes the system’s survival as a reason to overrule the people whose decisions he was meant to serve.

Executive English Toolkit

key-person dependency — reliance on an individual’s essential knowledge, relationships, or decisions.

operational continuity — the ability to keep work functioning; it does not by itself establish agreement about the work’s purpose.

role conflict — tension between obligations attached to different positions or relationships.

allegation / finding — a claim requiring examination / a conclusion established through an examination of evidence.

leverage — an advantage or pressure that can influence another person’s conduct.

principal–agent problem — a conflict that can arise when someone delegated authority pursues interests that diverge from the delegator’s.

mandate — the authority and scope under which someone is expected to act.

second-order consequences — further effects produced by people’s responses to an initial action or outcome.

Four phrases for clearer executive reasoning

These are original practice sentences, not dialogue quoted from the series.

PurposePractice sentenceWhat it separates
Define authorityWho has the mandate to change this decision?Having influence from having authorization.
Examine a claimLet’s distinguish the allegation from the evidence supporting it.Pressure or repetition from proof.

15 Advanced Reading Questions: Inference & Evaluation

Use only the English analysis above. Select the best-supported answer before opening its explanation. The questions test causal reasoning, the scope of evidence, competing purposes, and the limits of an analogy.

1. Which statement best captures the analysis’s central argument?

  1. A network is most secure when the person with the greatest operational knowledge chooses its future direction.
  2. A leader’s return restores the legitimacy of decisions that colleagues made during the absence.
  3. Competence and continuity can conceal a conflict over who is entitled to decide the system’s future.
  4. An organization loses the ability to distinguish loyalty from expertise whenever its members change roles.
Question 1 — Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. Competence and continuity can conceal a conflict over who is entitled to decide the system’s future.

The analysis repeatedly separates the ability to keep work going from the authority to determine its purpose. A gives expertise the entitlement the essay challenges. B treats return as automatic validation. D turns a difficult question into an unavoidable inability to judge.

2. Suppose every important routine continued during Red’s absence. Which conclusion would still require separate evidence?

  1. Some people were capable of performing work without Red’s direct involvement.
  2. The people performing that work remained committed to the future Red had chosen.
  3. The interruption in Red’s personal presence did not stop every ongoing activity.
  4. The network retained enough capacity to complete at least its continuing routines.
Question 2 — Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. The people performing that work remained committed to the future Red had chosen.

Continued performance supports conclusions about capacity and ongoing activity. It does not establish agreement about succession or purpose. The other options remain within what the hypothetical directly supplies.

3. Why does the analysis emphasize that Marvin’s plot preceded Red’s withdrawal?

  1. To establish that Red’s later absence had no effect on any part of the network.
  2. To show that Marvin’s responsibility was already known when the Task Force first reunited.
  3. To suggest that maintaining the business compensated for Marvin’s earlier actions.
  4. To prevent the later discovery of the betrayal from being mistaken for its origin.
Question 3 — Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: D. To prevent the later discovery of the betrayal from being mistaken for its origin.

The point is causal and chronological: a betrayal revealed after an absence need not have begun because of that absence. A goes beyond the correction, B confuses events with their discovery, and C turns later service into an unsupported justification.

4. Which interpretation best respects the distinction between the FBI team and Red’s network?

  1. An institution can retain its formal authority while a particular collaboration remains dependent on personal knowledge.
  2. A private source gains the institution’s authority whenever the institution relies on that source’s information.
  3. A formal institution cannot have operational dependence on anyone who works outside its official structure.
  4. The survival of the private network demonstrates that the public team’s previous operating model has returned.
Question 4 — Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. An institution can retain its formal authority while a particular collaboration remains dependent on personal knowledge.

Formal authority and operational dependence are different properties. The analysis allows them to coexist. B converts dependence into a transfer of authority, C rules out a dependence the essay describes, and D equates the continuity of two distinct structures.

5. What would be the strongest application of the analysis to Dembe’s competing obligations?

  1. Use the length of the old relationship to determine which obligation should prevail in every case.
  2. Treat the change of employer as sufficient evidence that the earlier relationship no longer matters.
  3. Identify the duties relevant to the particular request without treating personal trust as blanket authorization.
  4. Let the person seeking information define what Dembe’s current role allows him to disclose.
Question 5 — Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. Identify the duties relevant to the particular request without treating personal trust as blanket authorization.

The passage makes boundaries specific to duties and requests. A makes history decisive in advance; B treats a formal transition as erasing personal history; D allows another party’s need to define the recipient’s obligations.

6. Why is the Ressler discussion compatible with accountability rather than opposed to it?

  1. It recognizes changed circumstances while leaving open what support and responsibilities are appropriate now.
  2. It treats prior suffering as enough to validate decisions made after a return to work.
  3. It requires the institution to wait for proof that the individual has returned to his former condition.
  4. It allows the individual’s previous job title to serve as evidence of present readiness.
Question 6 — Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. It recognizes changed circumstances while leaving open what support and responsibilities are appropriate now.

The analysis rejects both permanent disqualification and automatic exemption. Attention to present circumstances can make an assessment more relevant. B excuses decisions by their background; C makes restoration of a past state a prerequisite; D substitutes status for evidence.

7. What follows from the distinction between an accusation and the leverage produced by it?

  1. A claim that has not been established cannot exert meaningful pressure on the person it targets.
  2. The seriousness of the consequences establishes the credibility of the accusation that triggers them.
  3. A respected person’s response to pressure should be excluded from any later examination of the facts.
  4. A threat can distort a person’s decisions even when the truth of its underlying allegation remains unsettled.
Question 7 — Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: D. A threat can distort a person’s decisions even when the truth of its underlying allegation remains unsettled.

Pressure and proof operate differently. The target can respond to a threat before the allegation is established. A denies that mechanism, B mistakes impact for evidence, and C turns respect into immunity from scrutiny.

8. Which reading of Aram is most closely supported by the English analysis?

  1. His difficulty establishes that specialist knowledge is generally incompatible with leadership.
  2. His challenge involves bearing responsibility for judgment without treating self-doubt as a final verdict on his worth.
  3. His position shows that a leader should follow an experienced adviser whenever colleagues disagree.
  4. His internal struggle proves that the team provides no opportunities for reasoned disagreement.
Question 8 — Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. His challenge involves bearing responsibility for judgment without treating self-doubt as a final verdict on his worth.

The analysis ties leadership pressure to judgment, doubt, and self-punishment. It does not make expertise a disqualification, give an adviser final authority, or infer a complete absence of dissent from an individual’s internal experience.

9. Even if Marvin had correctly identified a weakness in Liz’s suitability, which additional inference would remain unjustified?

  1. His criticism might deserve examination on its own merits.
  2. A decision could have weaknesses despite the decision-maker’s confidence in it.
  3. His criticism would entitle him to remove her and impose his preferred succession.
  4. His operational knowledge could help him recognize a risk within the network.
Question 9 — Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. His criticism would entitle him to remove her and impose his preferred succession.

A valid criticism does not establish permission to choose the remedy, seize authority, or use violence. The other options concern what expertise or criticism might reasonably contribute without crossing that boundary.

10. Why does the essay acknowledge Cooper’s personal interest in the outcome for Marvin?

  1. To avoid equating an institutional course of action with the complete absence of self-interest.
  2. To establish that Cooper and Red ultimately want an identical result by different methods.
  3. To show that Cooper’s need for protection invalidates any evidence he might uncover.
  4. To make personal stakes the sole criterion for deciding who should control the case.
Question 10 — Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. To avoid equating an institutional course of action with the complete absence of self-interest.

Cooper’s institutional position does not make his motives purely detached. Recognizing that complexity does not erase the disagreement with Red, invalidate evidence automatically, or make motives the only basis for assessing authority.

11. Why can Marvin’s disclosure to Wujing be dangerous without providing a complete map of Red’s operations?

  1. A limited disclosure is more reliable than a full account because it is easier to remember.
  2. The danger depends on recipients overlooking how little operational detail they have received.
  3. The disclosure gives Wujing formal authority over the institutions that cooperated with Red.
  4. The disclosed relationship can change whom recipients hold responsible and what they may choose to do.
Question 11 — Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: D. The disclosed relationship can change whom recipients hold responsible and what they may choose to do.

The mechanism is a changed interpretation followed by a possible response. A recipient need not receive every operational detail to identify an enemy or seek allies. The other options introduce reliability, recipient error, or formal authority that the passage does not establish.

12. Which conclusion best respects the endpoint of Season 9 as described in the passage?

  1. Wujing’s knowledge has become harmless because the person who disclosed it is no longer active.
  2. His escape and announced intention establish an active threat without establishing the later campaign’s results.
  3. His stated intention demonstrates that the intended coalition has already achieved its purpose.
  4. The absence of a completed campaign means that the disclosure has not yet had any significant effect.
Question 12 — Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. His escape and announced intention establish an active threat without establishing the later campaign’s results.

The analysis separates a concrete threat from its eventual outcome. A ignores information’s persistence, C converts intention into completed success, and D denies significance until every consequence has occurred.

13. Suppose critical knowledge were documented and available to several trusted managers. Which risk in the analysis could still remain?

  1. The only copy of the essential operating instructions would still be held by the absent leader.
  2. Routine work would still require reconstructing the missing procedures from individual memory.
  3. A manager could understand the authorized purpose yet use delegated access to pursue a conflicting one.
  4. Each manager would still have to recover the same undocumented knowledge before routine work could resume.
Question 13 — Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. A manager could understand the authorized purpose yet use delegated access to pursue a conflicting one.

Documentation can address concentrated knowledge without guaranteeing agreement about goals or authorized conduct. C preserves that remaining risk. The other options reintroduce missing or exclusively held operating knowledge, which the hypothetical has addressed.

14. Which hypothetical example most closely reproduces the principal–agent conflict emphasized in Marvin’s story?

  1. A specialist finds a flaw in a transition plan and submits evidence to the people authorized to reconsider it.
  2. An interim director keeps a foundation running but secretly redirects its succession process toward a mission its trustees rejected.
  3. A successor receives a defined mandate and asks for clarification when a decision falls outside its stated scope.
  4. A manager continues routine services while an authorized committee openly resolves a disagreement over future priorities.
Question 14 — Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. An interim director keeps a foundation running but secretly redirects its succession process toward a mission its trustees rejected.

B combines successful day-to-day execution with the misuse of entrusted power to impose an incompatible purpose. The other cases preserve a review channel or respect the boundary of delegated authority. The analogy concerns the structure of the conflict, not an equivalence between its consequences.

15. Which proposed lesson stays within the limits of the analysis?

  1. Clarifying mandates, review, and incentives may expose conflicts, but the drama does not prove that one safeguard guarantees prevention.
  2. Concentrating decision rights in the most technically capable person removes the conflict between expertise and legitimacy.
  3. The existence of a betrayer establishes that delegating important work is less effective than personal control in every setting.
  4. The criminal network demonstrates that lawful institutions should adopt its methods whenever continuity is threatened.
Question 15 — Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. Clarifying mandates, review, and incentives may expose conflicts, but the drama does not prove that one safeguard guarantees prevention.

The essay uses the drama to formulate questions, not to establish a universal causal law. B repeats Marvin’s leap from competence to entitlement. C overgeneralizes from one narrative, and D ignores the explicitly limited scope of the analogy.
